history1A few countries lay claim to the creation of this elegant pastime, but the consensus is that the water pipe originated in the North Western regions of India around 500 years ago. Invented by the physician Hakim Abul-Fath Gilani, who apparently wanted to find a “healthier” refinement to smoking believing that the tobacco would be purified if it passed through water before being inhaled. In the 17th century, as the water pipe made its way through Persia and into Turkey, its shape and components started to develop and resemble the shisha as we know and love today. The Ottomans developed a larger and more sophisticated pipe, replacing the wooden base with glass and added a clay bowl above the head.

history From Turkey, water pipe smoking migrated south into the Arab world to Lebanon and Syria where it became known as nargile. Then spreading further to Egypt and Morocco where it was called Shisha (the Persian word for glass).

Over the centuries shisha has steadily made its way to the rest of the world, famously becoming part of mainstream western culture in 1865 when Lewis Carroll wrote Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. It remains unclear when flavours were introduced to the shisha smoking experience, but we believe this chapter is only just beginning. There are many flavours still to be tried and we will be sure to share them with you as we continue on our own journey to discover the best of them.

TESTING YOUR EQUIPMENTOur range of products is crafted to offer a rich, full of flavour smoking experience so it is important that you have an airtight shisha. There are a few simple steps to ensure a smooth smoke.

1. Gently push to insert the stem of your shisha with its seal into the empty glass jar.

2. Insert the end of the hose into the hose port. You might need to use a plastic seal to prevent air from leaking.

3. To check the air flow on your shisha. Put your hand over the top of your shisha stem and inhale through the hose. If there is little or no air intake your shisha is ready to enjoy!

ASSEMBLING YOUR SHISHAstep1Remove the shisha stem from the glass jar and pour water into the jar. Put the stem back into the jar. The bottom of the shisha stem should be submerged about 3 cm (1 inch) into the water.

step1Pop open our newly designed Al Fakher package and peel off the freshness seal. Break up the shisha molasses as you sprinkle them into the clay bowl so that they are loose enough for air to pass through. The shisha molasses should be filled to the rim of the bowl, but no higher.

step1If you are using a metal screen, place it on top of the bowl. If you are using aluminum foil, wrap it over the head so that it fits snugly. Make evenly spaced holes through the foil to allow air to pass through.

step1Place the bowl on top of the shisha stem. You might need to use a rubber seal to ensure the connection is airtight.

step1Light your coals and wait for them to become red hot before spreading them evenly on the foil.

step1Take a few breaths on the hose to get the air flowing. Give it a minute or two before the hookah is smoking properly.

Sit back comfortably and enjoy the incomparable full flavor of Al Fakher molasses!

CELEBRATING THE ART OF SHISHAWe are always on the lookout for ways to improve your shisha smoking experience. Here are a few tips we picked up along the way:

Cleaning your shisha after every smoking session will avoid the build up of residues that will eventually clog the system.

When perforating the foil on your shisha bowl, make small holes to avoid burning the molasses. Use a toothpick, a pen or a fork when you punch holes into the aluminum foil. The bigger the clay bowl, the more holes you should have.

Do not use too much coal and the smaller the pieces the better. Too much or too big will burn the molasses really quickly and give a burnt aftertaste when you are smoking.

Once you have packed your bowl, cover it with aluminum foil (without holes), flip the bowl upside down and let it sit for a few minutes. This will make sure the molasses at the top layer are wetter before you burn which will enhance the flavor.

If a rubber seal is too small or you notice air leaking somewhere, use a little tissue paper in between or use insulating tape to ensure your shisha remains airtight.

Some smokers like to use a shisha diffuser when smoking. This plastic body that is attached to the bottom of the shisha stem diffuses the suction by breaking down the big bubbles into many small ones. This improves the smoking experience by creating more smoke and enhancing the taste.
